What causes night sweats in particular? The most common cause is hyperthyroidism which is a condition whereby one suffers from a thyroid that is overactive which produces an excess amount of hormones. And an excessive amount of hormones can cause what is known as thyrotoxicosis. The metabolic cells are stimulated by thyroid hormones and are produced by the thyroid gland which is situated in the lower part of the neck.
The function of the thyroid gland is to remove iodine from the blood which in turn comes mostly from the food we eat such as sea food etc and uses this to produce thyroid hormones. Night sweat causes include hyperthyroidism which can be due to Grave’s disease, an excessive intake of thyroid hormones, an abnormal secretion of TSH, and inflammation of the thyroid gland and an excessive intake of iodine.
Grave’s disease is caused for the thyroid gland becoming over active and is a hereditary disease and is found to be far more common in women than men. The triggers for this disease include smoking, anxiety and stress, medications and radiation to the neck area as well as infectious organisms such as viruses. So as you can see what causes night sweats is mainly a malfunctioning thyroid gland.
Night sweat causes include people suffering from TB as these patients will sweat excessively during the night mainly under the soles of their feet. A high fever will also cause night sweating and women that are experiencing menopause will also sweat excessively at night.
Should you be experiencing night sweats it is advisable to make an appointment and see your physician as you may or may not be suffering from hyperthyroidism, TB or menopause? All of the above can be treated effectively and in turn your night sweats will subside and disappear once the medication has taken effect.
