It is often noticed that some medicines have severe or minor side effects. Potonix is a drug that does have certain side effects but not everyone suffers from it. The minor side effects that the drug does have on some patients can be easily treated.
Some of the usual Protonix side effects are Nausea, upset stomach, pain in the head, eruption of rashes, rise in the blood sugar levels, and malfunction of the liver. Other side effects that accompany Protonix are constipation, pain in the joints and back, dizzy feeling, asthenia, gastric problems, prolonged cough, migraine, pain in the chest, bronchial infection, infection in the urinary tract, and digestive problems.
Protonix is prescribed by doctors to patients with chronic stomach problem. It is recommended to people who suffer from Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease, commonly known as GERD. It is a disease when the acids in the stomach return to the esophagus. The constant presence of the acids in the esophagus ultimately leads to the erosion of the inner lining of the esophagus and that aggravates the suffering of the patient. Protonix helps stop the return of the acids to the esophagus and also prevents the formation of too much acid in the stomach. The over production of acids is called Zollinger Ellison Syndrome.
Protonix may also be given to children above the age of one year. Though there is no fixed dose for the children doctors advised that Protonix must be used for a short span of time, a maximum of eight weeks. There have been no clinical tests done on the reaction of Protonix on children.
There are times when one medicine can be used to treat other ailments too. This is termed “Off label usage”. However, Protonix, till date, is not recommended for the treatment of other disease than the ones listed. Protonix is highly effective for most patients. The results are visible within a week of the treatment. Usually the acid secretion reduces by ninety five percent.
Protonix can be taken after meals or on an empty stomach. The dosage must be strictly followed. If you have been taking antacids there is no need to stop that. The Protonix side effectslike gas formation, sleeplessness and nauseating feeling are common and you need not be scared about it. However, if the intensity of the side effects increases with time then the doctor should be immediately consulted.
If the Protonix side effects include inflammation of the face, damage to the eyes, skin irritation or breathing problems, visit the physician without delay. You may be allergic to Protonix and it is the doctor who is the best judge to adjust the dose for you. If and when Protonix is taken along with other drugs the side effect may aggravate so make sure you inform the doctor about the other medicines you take.
Protonix taken by pregnant mothers may prove to be harmful. It is to be taken only under unavoidable circumstances. The Protonix side effects are seen in the infant that is breast fed. Protonix mingles with the milk and harms the child.
